Kathy Jo Gutgsell joined the UH Music Therapy team in October of 2008. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from North Park University in Chicago, Illinois and a Music Therapy Equivalency from the University of Louisville, Kentucky. She completed her internship at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City specializing in Palliative Medicine and Newborn Intensive Care. Kathy Jo was a hospice nurse providing therapeutic music for her patients for eleven years, during which she returned to college to study music therapy. At UH, she sees adult patients on the medical-surgical units and works closely with the Palliative Care Team. With funding from the Kulas Foundation, she is conducting a two year experimental research study to measure pain before and after music therapy in patients with advanced disease. Kathy Jo facilitates a weekly music therapy "JAM" for patients on a general medical floor, Lakeside 65, and provides music therapy one half day per week for Hospice Services of Southwest General Health Center in Strongsville, Ohio. After living many years in Lexington, Kentucky, Kathy Jo and her family moved to Cleveland in 2007. In her spare time, Kathy Jo enjoys hiking and spending time with her family and friends.
